MITCH MITCHELL RIP (1947-2008)

Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group's last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday morning, 12 November. He was 61.

Mitchell was a powerful force on the Hendrix band's 1967 debut album "Are You Experienced?" as well as the trio's albums "Electric Ladyland" and "Axis: Bold As Love."

The Englishman had been drumming for the Experience Hendrix Tour, which performed Friday in Portland as the last stop on the West Coast part of the tour.

An employee at Portland's Benson Hotel called police after discovering Mitchell's body. Erin Patrick, a deputy medical examiner, said Mitchell apparently died of natural causes. An autopsy was planned.

"He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend," said Janie Hendrix, chief executive of the Experience Hendrix Tour and Jimi Hendrix' stepsister. "His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated."

Bob Merlis, a spokesman for the tour, said Mitchell had stayed in Portland for a four-day vacation and planned to leave Wednesday.

Hendrix died in 1970. Bass player Noel Redding died in 2003.

THUNDER NEW ALBUM,EP AND TOUR

Thunder have announced that their new album "Bang!" will be released on 3rd November 2008 together with their third EP.

The album, which features 12 brand new tracks, was recorded at Walton Castle near Bristol, at various times during the spring of this year. The place is not a studio as such, but the band thought the 2 foot thick stone walls and large selection of rooms and turrets would work brilliantly, so they moved all their recording kit, all the equipment, tons of cables and pipes, and their swimming trunks down to the place, and guess what? They were right! All songs were written by guitarist Luke Morley, except Watching Over You (which he wrote with Andy Taylor Jr and Mike Keen).

The band's third EP, Joy of Six, comes in a very sexy chunky cardboard box, with a lift off lid, and it's big enough to house the previous 2 EPs (Six Of One and Half A Dozen Of The Other).

THUNDER will be touring the UK in November, performing 8 rocking dates, supported by newcomers Heaven's Basement and Get Vegas.

Drummer Harry James is unable to do Thunder's UK tour, as he was admitted to hospital with kidney stones.

Todd Rundgren

TODD PLAYS GUITAR GOD: UK TOUR CONTINUES

Todd Rundgren, the man who gave us the classic albums 'Something/Anything?', 'A Wizard, A True Star', 'Faithful', 'Hermit of Mink Hollow' and 2004's critically acclaimed 'Liars', will perform four UK concerts following the September 29th UK release of his new studio album 'ARENA'.

Todd plays four rare UK concerts including Manchester Academy 2 (Nov 6), Edinburgh Picture House (Nov 7) and Norwich Waterfront (Nov 22) and London Kentish Town Forum (Nov 23).

'Arena is a definite return to riff-oriented guitar rock," says Rundgren. "It's supposed to make you reflexively pump your fist and wave a lighter in the air. The concerts will be a straight-ahead, guitar-rock extravaganza. We can't afford the flamethrowers yet, but we'll make up for it with aggression."

The Arena Tour band will feature Jesse Gress (guitar), Rachel Haden (bass), Matt Bolton (guitar, keyboards), Prairie Prince (drums), and Todd Rundgren (guitar, vocals).

David Gilmour

DAVID GILMOUR RELEASES 'DAVID GILMOUR LIVE IN GDANSK' - DOUBLE LIVE ALBUM AND CONCERT DVD

'David Gilmour Live In Gdansk' is a double live album plus concert DVD released on 22 September 2008 on EMI Records. 'David Gilmour Live In Gdansk', the first solo live album from Pink Floyd's singer / guitarist, captures the magic of his concert held in front of 50,000 in the Gdansk shipyards, the final performance of his critically acclaimed 2006 'On An Island tour'. It also features the first ever recording of selected Pink Floyd classics performed with an orchestra.

David Gilmour said of the Gdansk concert:

"This was the first time I have played in Poland and it was a thrill to be there helping to mark one of the most important anniversaries in recent European history.

The Gdansk shipyard is a deeply symbolic place and it was an honour to perform our music there. It was particularly exciting to have my friend Zbigniew Preisner there conducting the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and to be able to perform my album for the first time as it was intended".

The double live album 'David Gilmour Live In Gdansk', produced by David Gilmour and Phil Manzanera, features the Gdansk concert and demonstrates a musician and his band playing at the very peak of their musical brilliance. The six piece band is accompanied for the only time on the On An Island tour by an orchestra: the 40-strong string section of the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Zbigniew Preisner, orchestral arranger on David Gilmour's number 1 album, 'On An Island'. It is the first ever live recording with an orchestra of Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes' and 'A Great Day For Freedom', the latter performed here as a one-off for this special Solidarity anniversary.

'David Gilmour Live In Gdansk' is available in several formats, all of which include all the orchestral tracks; the 113-minute 'Concert DVD' includes footage of all the orchestral songs, plus 'Echoes' and 'Astronomy Domine'. 'Wot's Uh The Deal?' is included only on the vinyl LP set.

Queen 2008

"THE COSMOS ROCKS" QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS FIRST STUDIO ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 15

The first thing you notice about The Cosmos Rocks, the much anticipated first album from rock legends Queen + Paul Rodgers is "all tracks written by Queen and Paul Rodgers" - "produced and performed by Brian May, Paul Rodgers and Roger Taylor" (indicating that between them they played all instruments, including bass - Paul and Brian swapping duties - in case you were going to ask). This is obviously not a case of Rodgers lightly stepping in to fill a vocal gap, as some might have been drawn to assume would be the case when the three of them got into the studio together.

No, this is a full bodied, group endeavour: May, Rodgers and Taylor in a totally democratic union, even down to equally sharing the credits. The album's dedication to legendary Queen front man 'Freddie Mercury,' (you'll also see thanks credits to John Deacon and Paul Kossoff) shows the band mates still feel his presence strongly enough to dedicate this entirely new work to him, nearly 13 years on from Queen's last studio album.

You also wonder how Rodgers who takes control as main vocalist on all thirteen tracks here feels about his work being dedicated to the man whose fans still worship at the altar of the pre-Mercury demise Queen.

But then thinking about it, it doesn't seem quite so strange. Brian May and Roger Taylor have, after all, never shied from acknowledging the mighty presence Mercury provided to the band on stage and the wonders of his extraordinary creativity in the studio. Mostly, they acknowledge how even today, they still miss 'dear Fred'.

In the case of Rodgers, he can stand assured in the fact that Mercury always rated him as one of the best rock voices of his time. It is public record that Mercury would make a point of dropping into the Marquee or any number of other London venues when Rodgers was performing with his band Free. Mercury often in his past acknowledged Free's Fire and Water as one of the albums to most influence Queen. On top of this, Rodgers has now played enough sold-out and wildly received dates as Queen + Paul Rodgers to know that it works, and that the acceptance is there. You only had to be there at last month's Nelson Mandela 90th birthday concert to feel the heat from the audience to the band's blinding set.

It all makes perfect sense when you get the opportunity to see what the band have to say about the sessions:

"We went in and played, every day, and ALL kinds of things happened, little bits of chemistry happening between us. It's good, organic music.

"There's a lot of guitar orchestras and some of our old trademarks, but at the core of it you'll hear the three of us playing. People really, truly playing together in the studio - you don't get that much these days. But, you will get it on their new album.

"Do they still call them 'albums'? I don't even know. But this is really, we believe, an Album in the old sense of the word - something you can put on and listen to all the way through, and it takes you on a journey ... the subjects and moods in it are widely spaced - but nevertheless, a challenge to the listener to put his day on hold for an hour or so, be drawn in, make connections, and experience something new.

"These days it has seemed to us that few people have this in mind - CD's by large tend to be a collection of songs, often produced by different teams, assembled in random sequence - with the idea that folks will shuffle the order on their iPods anyway. Of course you always have that option! But our teachers were the Beatles, Hendrix, blues + soul and ... you know where we're going with this."

The Cosmos Rocks was recorded and mixed at Taylor's The Priory studio between November 2007 and August 2008, and co-produced and engineered by Joshua J Macrae, Justin Shirley-Smith and Kris Fredriksson. It marks the first album of newly recorded material from Queen + Paul Rodgers since they first set out on the road in 2005, and the first Queen studio album since 1995.

Santana

MULTI DIMENSIONAL WARRIOR EXPLORES SPIRITUAL ESSENCE OF SANTANA

UNIQUE TWO-CD SANTANA COLLECTION WITH ONE DISC OF VOCALS AND SECOND DISC OF INSTRUMENTALS

ALL TRACKS PERSONALLY SELECTED BY CARLOS SANTANA

The first historic Santana collection to present music spanning three-plus decades from all three major labels - Columbia, Polydor/PolyGram, and Arista/BMG - is released on 29 September.

A decade after their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame (in January 1998), the hypnotic power of Santana continues to be one of the enduring and mysterious pleasures of the band's music.

That meditative power has coursed through Santana's recordings for four decades, but has never been the exclusive focus of any one collection - until now.

MULTI DIMENSIONAL WARRIOR is a unique project, with every track personally selected and sequenced by Carlos Santana to create an engaging journey through a soundscape of moods and feelings. In an unprecedented concept, disc one comprises 14 vocal performances chosen from albums spanning the 1970s, '80s, '90s, and '00s, while disc two comprises 14 instrumental performances from albums covering the same years. MULTI DIMENSIONAL WARRIOR is the first anthology to include tracks from the band's three major label associations: Columbia, Polydor/ PolyGram, and Arista/BMG. With just three exceptions, all of the albums represented on disc one are different than the albums represented on disc two. Carlos Santana supervised new overdubs to five tracks on the set. He personally added guitar to 'Spirit' and 'Right Now,' Santana band member Chester Thompson contributed piano to 'Let There Be Light,' and Barbara Higbie added harp to 'Praise' and 'Let There Be Light.'

SonyBMG release The Clash 'Live at Shea Stadium' album and 'The Clash Live Revolution Rock' DVD simultaneously on 6th October. The Clash, opening for The Who on their farewell tour of the US, played two nights at the legendary Shea Stadium (12th & 13th Oct 1982). Recorded by Glyn Johns, the album features the second night's performance in its entirety. Despite being the support act, the New York Post reported 'there were as many Clash fans on those nights as Who fans'. One of the few remaining unreleased Clash treasures, the recordings have long been sought after by fans. The tapes were unearthed by the late Joe Strummer whilst packing for a move.

Richard Wright

Richard Wright 28.07.43-15.09.08

PINK FLOYD'S RICHARD WRIGHT R.I.P

It was announced that Richard Wright lost his battle with cancer, and died on Monday 15 September.

Wright's long-time musical collaborator David Gilmour commented: "In the welter of arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was frequently forgotten."

"He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound."

PETER GREEN - THE ANTHOLOGY 4CD BOX SET IN SEPTEMBER

Released September 2008 on Salvo Records / Union Square Music, this is the first complete career overview of one of the most revered blues guitarists of all time.

It's also the first time that Peter Green himself has had an active involvement in such a project, working closely with the label and compiler John Crosby.

To this end, The Peter Green Anthology will provide a fascinating insight for fans, with rare and unseen photos, extensive new sleeve notes and of course the music from his earliest forays with the B Looners, through the John Mayall Bluesbreakers and Fleetwood Mac years to more recent solo and Splinter Group material.

UNIVERSAL MUSIC CATALOGUE LAUNCHES LOST TUNES DOWNLOAD STORE DEDICATED TO RARE MUSIC

Universal Music has launched Lost Tunes - a groundbreaking online download store dedicated to exclusives, rarities and overlooked classics. The site launch includes 134 albums that are available as downloads exclusively through Lost Tunes. Lost Tunes marks a new era in catalogue marketing, underlining Universal Music's commitment to fulfil music lovers' desire to buy ever-rarer material as digital downloads.

The initial batch of digital-download exclusives include The Walker Brothers' 'Live In Japan', three albums by the hugely acclaimed Comsat Angels, Bill Fay's eponymous album, UK blues Nine Below Zero, Mellow Candle and Oriental Sunshine to name but a few.

To mark the launch of this landmark store, Fiction Records' Delays, a band who have - an intuitive sense of what makes a great pop song" (NME) are recording their four favourite 'lost tunes' to be released exclusively for Lost Tunes on Monday 1st September. This release will coincide with another major Lost Tunes exclusive, a new collection of previously-unreleased material from The La's - eight rare recordings including the John Leckie and Steve Lilywhite mixes of 'Come In Out Come Out' and John Leckie and the Bob Andrew mix of 'Way Out'.

Greg Gilbert from Delays commented: "For us it's always been about songs and to get to reinterpret the music that has inspired us is a massive thrill. The Lost Tunes catalogue is so rich it was hard to know where to start but we feel we've found some real gems whilst "lost" in the vaults."

A further 500 exclusive download albums are scheduled to be launched on the store in the coming six months. Future exclusives will also include never-before-released gems from the Trojan, Fiction and Decca archives to name but a few.

All downloads on the site are available as highest quality 320kpbs MP3s. Downloaded tracks will work on any MP3-compatible fixed or portable device, including iPods, MP3 players and mobile phones.

Alongside download exclusives, the site features must-have catalogue albums and overlooked gems from a variety of artists, including Joni Mitchell, Scott Walker, Marianne Faithfull and The White Noise. A breadth of labels are represented on the site, ranging from rarities and digital exclusives from Prestige, Verve and Impulse to must-haves from A&M, Motown, Stax and Vertigo.

Lost Tunes is a major project for Universal Music which began just over a year ago, with a dedicated team and have been searching through the Universal Music archives for forgotten gems.

The site is designed with music lovers in mind, with a focus on in-depth editorial and product descriptions. A 'Smart Search' function has been developed for the store, allowing users to browse by any combination of genre, decade and label for a more refined browsing experience. Significantly, standard genre categories have been overturned in favour of more specific sub-genres, allowing users to browse across an impressive total of 38 genres and sub-genres ranging from Progressive Rock to Electronica to Dub to Jazz Fusion to World to Spokenword.

Azi Eftekhari, Head of Digital and Media for Universal Music Catalogue commented: "We wanted Lost Tunes to replicate the experience of going to a favourite local record shop where browsing and discovering music is a real pleasure and an adventure. We only include music that we love."

ELVIS PRESLEY COMPLETE '68 COMEBACK SPECIAL

4 CD ALBUM DELUXE & STANDARD EDITIONS AVAILABLE - 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS!

August 2008 will be a red letter month for fans of Elvis Presley. Amazingly it will be 40 years since the King of Rock 'n' Roll took to the stage in what became a milestone in televised musical performances and a career highlight, the infamous '68 Comeback Special.

To honour this very special occasion, Sony BMG Music Entertainment will release the 'Complete '68 Comeback Special' 4 CD box set on 4 August, featuring the whole story from the rehearsals to the finished show, out-takes and rarely-heard gems, packaged in both deluxe and standard versions.

During a career of invention and re-invention the '68 Comeback Special is THE pivotal performance of Elvis' career. He was back from the movie career that had kept him away from the live arena throughout most of the 60's and what's more he looked and sounded amazing.

This 4 disc box set will feature over 103 songs including "That's All Right", "Heartbreak Hotel", "One Night", "Love Me" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", all recorded at NBC's Burbank Studios for a TV special which captured the 'Guitar Man' at his captivating best.

FLURRY OF NEW HEART RE-RELEASES CONTINUE TO HIT THE STREET

Major Summer Tour & Return of Jupiter's Darling

The next two months will have a whole lot of Heart - the superstar rock band, that is - with three releases of classic and recent music coinciding with the group's three-month, 40-plus date nationwide summer tour. On May 13, Epic/Legacy will release a Heart twofer set that combines their landmark, multimillion selling albums Little Queen (1977) and Dog & Butterfly (1979) into one eco-friendly package as part of the debut of the X2 series. The X2 set boasts five bonus tracks, including a live recording of Heart performing Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway To Heaven.'

Epic/Legacy will also release a Heart title as part of its Playlist series that gathers 14 of the group's best songs - all re-mastered and mp3 ready - into an also eco-friendly digi-pak set that includes computer accessible pdf files containing liner notes essays, discographical information, photography, bonus features, and more.

The two packages also coincide with the recently announced June 3 re-release of Jupiter's Darling, Heart's most recent studio recording from 2004 that was hailed as 'probably their best album to date' from the influential and beloved band and 'the only album you need to buy this year' by England's Rave magazine. All Music Guide praised it as 'easily the band's finest moment in over 20 years [that] proves in spades that Heart is a vital and creative rock'n'roll unit and a force to be reckoned with.'

Heart's 32 years of ongoing and consistently high-quality rocking has had a cumulative effect that finds the band's appeal resurging as they make 2008 a particularly active year. The recent appearance by Ann & Nancy Wilson on the Idol Gives Back TV charity special performing 'Barracuda' with Fergie powered a sales surge on iTunes for the original track as well as the clip of the song from the show. And since the announcement of the group's summer tour with Journey and Cheap Trick (dates listed below), membership in the Heart fan club ('Heartmongers') has doubled. On the tour fans will be able to enjoy performances from the extensive catalog of hits as well as songs from Ann Wilson's recent Zoe/Rounder Records solo album Hope & Glory.

The group's many 2008 activities and resurgent popularity suggest that even after 30 million albums sold to date, a groundbreaking legacy and a stature to rival rock's biggest stars, Heart's fourth decade of rocking will be as notable as those that came before.

KOCH SIGNS DEAL WITH METAL GUITAR VIRTUOSO YNGWIE MALMSTEEN

KOCH Entertainment Distribution have announced today that it has signed an exclusive physical and digital distribution deal with Rising Force Records and its flagship artist neo-classical metal guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen.

Rising Force Records was launched in 2008 with the primary function to release and market new and back catalogue material from the world renowned guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen as well as signing new talent. The first title slated for release is "Perpetual Flame," a brand new recording from Malmsteen featuring ex-Judas Priest/Iced Earth singer Tim 'Ripper' Owens to be released via KOCH on October 14th. Additional titles and release dates will be announced by the label at a later date.

PRETENDERS BREAK UP THE CONCRETE FIRST EDITION TO BE RELEASED ON HANDMADE SEED PAPER

The Pretenders ninth studio album, Break Up The Concrete, will have a limited run of ecologically-friendly packaging with handmade seed paper starting on the album's release date of October 7. This paper can be planted and, with care, may sprout in 1 to 4 weeks.

The paper used on this plantable run, and the paper for subsequent non-plantable runs of the CD and vinyl configuration, has all been certified by the FSC, an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. The vinyl version of the album, to be released on September 23, is two 10" discs with a gatefold, die-cut to shape and debossed with concrete texture with a full Album CD in Mini Jacket

The ecological packaging should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the career of the Pretenders front woman Chrissie Hynde, who has always been on the forefront of ecological issues and humane treatment of animals.

Break Up The Concrete's 11 songs were recorded in 12 days making for an album both gritty and immediate which recalls the band's earliest days. Hynde, along with the other Pretenders: guitarist James Walbourne, bassist Nick Wilkinson and long time drummer Martin Chambers will be introducing new songs from the album on USA's Late Show With David Letterman on October 6 and then the Today Show the following morning October 7.
