MITCH MITCHELL RIP (1947-2008)
Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group's last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday morning, 12 November. He was 61.
Mitchell was a powerful force on the Hendrix band's 1967 debut album "Are You Experienced?" as well as the trio's albums "Electric Ladyland" and "Axis: Bold As Love."
The Englishman had been drumming for the Experience Hendrix Tour, which performed Friday in Portland as the last stop on the West Coast part of the tour.
An employee at Portland's Benson Hotel called police after discovering Mitchell's body. Erin Patrick, a deputy medical examiner, said Mitchell apparently died of natural causes. An autopsy was planned.
"He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend," said Janie Hendrix, chief executive of the Experience Hendrix Tour and Jimi Hendrix' stepsister. "His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated."
Bob Merlis, a spokesman for the tour, said Mitchell had stayed in Portland for a four-day vacation and planned to leave Wednesday.
Hendrix died in 1970. Bass player Noel Redding died in 2003.

THUNDER NEW ALBUM,EP AND TOUR
Thunder have announced that their new album "Bang!" will be released on 3rd November 2008 together with their third EP.
The album, which features 12 brand new tracks, was recorded at Walton Castle near Bristol, at various times during the spring of this year. The place is not a studio as such, but the band thought the 2 foot thick stone walls and large selection of rooms and turrets would work brilliantly, so they moved all their recording kit, all the equipment, tons of cables and pipes, and their swimming trunks down to the place, and guess what? They were right! All songs were written by guitarist Luke Morley, except Watching Over You (which he wrote with Andy Taylor Jr and Mike Keen).
The band's third EP, Joy of Six, comes in a very sexy chunky cardboard box, with a lift off lid, and it's big enough to house the previous 2 EPs (Six Of One and Half A Dozen Of The Other).
THUNDER will be touring the UK in November, performing 8 rocking dates, supported by newcomers Heaven's Basement and Get Vegas.
Drummer Harry James is unable to do Thunder's UK tour, as he was admitted to hospital with kidney stones.

TODD PLAYS GUITAR GOD: UK TOUR CONTINUES
Todd Rundgren, the man who gave us the classic albums 'Something/Anything?', 'A Wizard, A True Star', 'Faithful', 'Hermit of Mink Hollow' and 2004's critically acclaimed 'Liars', will perform four UK concerts following the September 29th UK release of his new studio album 'ARENA'.
Todd plays four rare UK concerts including Manchester Academy 2 (Nov 6), Edinburgh Picture House (Nov 7) and Norwich Waterfront (Nov 22) and London Kentish Town Forum (Nov 23).
'Arena is a definite return to riff-oriented guitar rock," says Rundgren. "It's supposed to make you reflexively pump your fist and wave a lighter in the air. The concerts will be a straight-ahead, guitar-rock extravaganza. We can't afford the flamethrowers yet, but we'll make up for it with aggression."
The Arena Tour band will feature Jesse Gress (guitar), Rachel Haden (bass), Matt Bolton (guitar, keyboards), Prairie Prince (drums), and Todd Rundgren (guitar, vocals).

DAVID GILMOUR RELEASES 'DAVID GILMOUR LIVE IN GDANSK' - DOUBLE LIVE ALBUM AND CONCERT DVD
'David Gilmour Live In Gdansk' is a double live album plus concert DVD released on 22 September 2008 on EMI Records. 'David Gilmour Live In Gdansk', the first solo live album from Pink Floyd's singer / guitarist, captures the magic of his concert held in front of 50,000 in the Gdansk shipyards, the final performance of his critically acclaimed 2006 'On An Island tour'. It also features the first ever recording of selected Pink Floyd classics performed with an orchestra.
David Gilmour said of the Gdansk concert:
"This was the first time I have played in Poland and it was a thrill to be there helping to mark one of the most important anniversaries in recent European history.
The Gdansk shipyard is a deeply symbolic place and it was an honour to perform our music there. It was particularly exciting to have my friend Zbigniew Preisner there conducting the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and to be able to perform my album for the first time as it was intended".
The double live album 'David Gilmour Live In Gdansk', produced by David Gilmour and Phil Manzanera, features the Gdansk concert and demonstrates a musician and his band playing at the very peak of their musical brilliance. The six piece band is accompanied for the only time on the On An Island tour by an orchestra: the 40-strong string section of the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Zbigniew Preisner, orchestral arranger on David Gilmour's number 1 album, 'On An Island'. It is the first ever live recording with an orchestra of Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes' and 'A Great Day For Freedom', the latter performed here as a one-off for this special Solidarity anniversary.
'David Gilmour Live In Gdansk' is available in several formats, all of which include all the orchestral tracks; the 113-minute 'Concert DVD' includes footage of all the orchestral songs, plus 'Echoes' and 'Astronomy Domine'. 'Wot's Uh The Deal?' is included only on the vinyl LP set.

"THE COSMOS ROCKS" QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS FIRST STUDIO ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 15
The first thing you notice about The Cosmos Rocks, the much anticipated first album from rock legends Queen + Paul Rodgers is "all tracks written by Queen and Paul Rodgers" - "produced and performed by Brian May, Paul Rodgers and Roger Taylor" (indicating that between them they played all instruments, including bass - Paul and Brian swapping duties - in case you were going to ask). This is obviously not a case of Rodgers lightly stepping in to fill a vocal gap, as some might have been drawn to assume would be the case when the three of them got into the studio together.
No, this is a full bodied, group endeavour: May, Rodgers and Taylor in a totally democratic union, even down to equally sharing the credits. The album's dedication to legendary Queen front man 'Freddie Mercury,' (you'll also see thanks credits to John Deacon and Paul Kossoff) shows the band mates still feel his presence strongly enough to dedicate this entirely new work to him, nearly 13 years on from Queen's last studio album.
You also wonder how Rodgers who takes control as main vocalist on all thirteen tracks here feels about his work being dedicated to the man whose fans still worship at the altar of the pre-Mercury demise Queen.
But then thinking about it, it doesn't seem quite so strange. Brian May and Roger Taylor have, after all, never shied from acknowledging the mighty presence Mercury provided to the band on stage and the wonders of his extraordinary creativity in the studio. Mostly, they acknowledge how even today, they still miss 'dear Fred'.
In the case of Rodgers, he can stand assured in the fact that Mercury always rated him as one of the best rock voices of his time. It is public record that Mercury would make a point of dropping into the Marquee or any number of other London venues when Rodgers was performing with his band Free. Mercury often in his past acknowledged Free's Fire and Water as one of the albums to most influence Queen. On top of this, Rodgers has now played enough sold-out and wildly received dates as Queen + Paul Rodgers to know that it works, and that the acceptance is there. You only had to be there at last month's Nelson Mandela 90th birthday concert to feel the heat from the audience to the band's blinding set.
It all makes perfect sense when you get the opportunity to see what the band have to say about the sessions:
"We went in and played, every day, and ALL kinds of things happened, little bits of chemistry happening between us. It's good, organic music.
"There's a lot of guitar orchestras and some of our old trademarks, but at the core of it you'll hear the three of us playing. People really, truly playing together in the studio - you don't get that much these days. But, you will get it on their new album.
"Do they still call them 'albums'? I don't even know. But this is really, we believe, an Album in the old sense of the word - something you can put on and listen to all the way through, and it takes you on a journey ... the subjects and moods in it are widely spaced - but nevertheless, a challenge to the listener to put his day on hold for an hour or so, be drawn in, make connections, and experience something new.
"These days it has seemed to us that few people have this in mind - CD's by large tend to be a collection of songs, often produced by different teams, assembled in random sequence - with the idea that folks will shuffle the order on their iPods anyway. Of course you always have that option! But our teachers were the Beatles, Hendrix, blues + soul and ... you know where we're going with this."
The Cosmos Rocks was recorded and mixed at Taylor's The Priory studio between November 2007 and August 2008, and co-produced and engineered by Joshua J Macrae, Justin Shirley-Smith and Kris Fredriksson. It marks the first album of newly recorded material from Queen + Paul Rodgers since they first set out on the road in 2005, and the first Queen studio album since 1995.
