THE AMAZING RHYTHM ACES Live In America 1979 The Store For Music (2007)

Amazing Rhythm Aces

A prime slice of vintage Americana here, this old live recording surfacing 28 years on. Just a shame the music I don't find particularly moving.

With their debut released in 1975, the band had clearly been on the road a fair bit and were quite tight.

The set kicks off with "The End Is Not In Sight", which mixes country rock and folk rock, the organ (a bit loud in the mix) adding a west coast feel.

"Hit The Nail On The Head" is more bluesy, with a touch of rock'n'roll, but done very 'easily', i.e. MOR.

In between the strumming and keyboards, there are however some decent guitar solos. Check out "Anything You Want"; the guitar's great, the piano funky, but the organ is up so high it drowns both in a cabaret feel.

There are a range of sounds mixed in here, from pub rock to, in "Who's Crying Now", the kind of part music you'd expect from Chas'n'Dave but in a much less cheesy way.

This is good background music, the more outstanding work hidden in the mix, but there's some good stuff there, but some coasting too.

The range of hits here make for a good introduction, and it's a set fans will love too.
