MAYLENE AND THE SONS OF DISASTER II Ferret Music (2007)
Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster's 'II' is stoner - think Clutch, but I have to say I found 'II' a bit more interesting than Clutch, since there's a lot more movement and not as much repetition.
With three guitars there's some the complexity you'd expect, delivered with unhurried panache and without over-reaching itself or becoming a study in guitar-onanism. For the most part we're talking groovy, simplistic riffs with harmonies and sweet solos and guitar duelling. At times there is an appealing change of direction, such as the meandering during 'Wylie', but much of the album has more energy and more focus than other stoner bands which adds to its appeal if you're not keen on seemingly directionless music. At times it even nudges towards the mainstream - stuff like, say, The Foo Fighters.
The vocal assault may or may not appeal, being too 'whisky and cigarettes' for some. Indeed, for me it is a bit too much at times - such as during 'Wylie' when it's a touch too shouty. At other times though, the vocals are clean, such as during 'Dry The River'.
Although Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster's 'II' is solidly in the stoner camp, it has many touches which make it an easier listen than more spaced-out material, with potential for wider appeal among hard rock fans who like a bit of groove. Not a perfect album, with some tracks appealing more than others, but there's a lot to like and I defy you to listen to 'Darkest Of Kin' without nodding your head.
