WOLVERINE ‘Cold Light Of Monday’
Earache(2003)

Wolverine

WOLVERINE ‘Cold Light Of Monday ’
(Earache Records 2003)

Last December, my girlfriend and I headed towards the Mean Fiddler to watch one of our favourite bands, Anathema. I heard that the support band was Wolverine, but I knew nothing of them prior to the gig. I can still remember that the band’s performance made a lot of heads bang that night (mine included), but left me with the feeling that there was still some room for improvement.

I was pleased to have received the band’s recent release "Cold Light Of Monday" from Earache Records. One thing is for sure: Wolverine are big fans of Pain Of Salvation and Anathema (supporting them was not a lucky coincidence after all). Just listen to "Carousel" and you will understand exactly what I’m talking about. The sound of the guitars and the constant transition from technical to more melodic riffs will make you believe that this album is a continuation of Pain Of Salvation’s "Perfect Element Pt I" album. The question is: Are Wolverine just a bad copy of the Swedish Prog masters?

No, definitely not. "Cold Light Of Monday" is a beautifuly made concept album which simply lacks experience. The album contains four killer songs: "Sarah", "New Best Friends", "Carousel" (my personal favourite) and "Tied With Sin", songs that only a band with inspiration and great potential would be able to write . The storyline is great, the production reaches high standards, but there is still this little something missing from this recipe in order to become perfect.

"Cold Light Of Monday" is an album that every prog/power metal fan should have in his collection, and is hopefully the steping stone which will built the foundations of a great band.
