STRAY ‘Stray’ Sanctuary CMRCD1203 (65:04) (2005)

This 1970 eponymous debut, a classic and one of Stray’s best, shows why Stray were so popular. A strong live draw 30 years on too, mixing hard rock with touches of prog and occasional boogie. Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris was a fan, with Maiden covering opener In Your Mind.

But it’s not all no-nonsense heads down, Around The World In 80 Days features a nice change in pace, with some nice range from vocalist Steve Gadd.

Guitarist Del Bromham produces some decent work too, with elements of folk rock introduced (think a much beefed up Jethro Tull).

A largely enjoyable album, although the sound is a little bright at times. Well annotated with 5 bonus tracks, it’s well worth forking out for.
