KRISIUN 'Works Of Carnage' (Century Media) (2003)

Krisiun

It’s been almost fourteen years since the Kolesne brothers decided to form Krisiun, an extreme Death Metal band which originates from the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Even though they’ve been through many difficult times, like most of the representatives of the Brazilian extreme sound (Sepultura, Sarcofago), the band have created a very good name by releasing products of pure hatred and aggression.

Influenced by bands like Deicide and Morbid Angel and with a general Thrash Metal attitude in their compositions, the Brazilian noisemakers have dedicated themselves to the specific branch of music which they have served unstoppably. The fifth studio album of this trio is called “Works of Carnage” and it is the third album that’s released through Century Media records.

I had the pleasure of watching Krisiun performing a thirty five minute gig in Greece, while touring with Kreator and Cannibal Corpse back in 2001. The band was quite energetic, the sound was pretty damn good and people seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a lot. There was one thing though that I didn’t really like about their music back then that is once again present in “Works of Carnage”.

It is really difficult to find the composition that will make the difference in a Krisiun album, and that has nothing to do with the musical abilities of the band’s members. Max Kolesne is a very skilful drummer that gives emphasis to technical hyper speed drumming. Being the sole guitarist in a band is always a difficult task, but Moyses Kolesne passes every test without any difficulty. Finally the voice of Alex Camargo (who also holds the duties of bass player), is the most appropriate for the band, even though it sounds a lot like that of Glen Benton (Deicide).

The problem is that the band has not yet managed to add that extra something to their style and sound that will make them unique. That should not make you indecisive as to whether you should get your hands on this album. “Works of Carnage” is a thirty two minute release that consists of eleven actual compositions (the twelfth song is a two minute outro), one of which is a cover of Venom’s “In League With Satan”. I had plenty of laughs reading a review where the author stated that even if he never heard the original song, he doubted as to whether it could be any better than this actual version (who said that internet cannot amuse you after all?). The production of the album is once again very good, and was handled by Pierre Remillard (Gorguts, Cryptopsy) in the Brazilian Bebop Studios.

Overall, 'Works of Carnage' is an album that will definitely satisfy Krisiun’s long term fans, and probably a big part of the extreme Metal supporters, but I doubt that it will become the milestone of the band. If your question is whether I would ever buy this album, the answer is yes. If the question is whether I would go to see a Krisiun gig, the answer is definitely yes. It’s just that I expect that one day they will release that album that will blow me away, but until then…
