DEMENTOR 'God Defamer' (Osmose Productions) (2004)
It is really funny how things change. Back in the 80’s we were all complaining about not having enough releases from Metal bands, and twenty-four years later we’re simply struggling to keep up with all the new releases, including those of bands we know and like.
Well, that’s probably the reason why I have never heard of the Slovakian Death Metal band Dementor before, even though their latest album "God Defamer" is the fourth studio effort since their birth back in 1988. Most of the eastern European bands that I know of are influenced by the US Death Metal school, and Dementor are no exception to that rule. That means that "God Defamer" is a thirty four-minute onslaught that displays fast technical guitar riffs, double drumming and distorted vocals with strong references to Antichristian beliefes – the ideal album for the fans of Morbid Angel and Deicide which should also be considered to be the band’s main influences.
I really like Extreme Death Metal, especially if it is performed with emotion like in this case with Dementor. The problem though is that it is really difficult do find a new band that will be able to produce something new to this already well covered branch of music. That means that if you are not a devoted fan of this style of music, you will not be able to enjoy "God Defamer" for what it is – a typical extreme Death Metal release.
Production wise, you will find the result quite satisfactory. That’s quite understandable since these duties were handled by Andy Classen, the man who also did the production for the latest Krisiun and Dew Scented releases. His contribution to the band’s sound has definitely raised the album’s value in the Metal stock market, but that is definitely not enough. What the band needs are those compositions that will stand out and make the difference, and unfortunately you will not be able to detect any of those in "God Defamer". You will definitely struggle to choose your favourite song of the album as I did, but if you do manage, it will probably be either "The Mighty Evil" or the title track "God Defamer".
I have plenty of friends back in Greece who will definitely fall for this release, but they are the type of people who strictly take no sugar with their tea, if you understand what I mean. This band is not recommended to the people who like to have variety in music and definitely not to people who have a medical condition that demands that you look for peace and quiet.
