DEATHSTARS Termination Bliss Nuclear Blast (2006)

Deathstars

For some reason I missed Deathstars debut album, 'Synthetic Generation' from 2003. So the moment I pressed play I was discovering a new band to my ears. I wasn't sure what to expect, but, opener, 'Tongues', grabbed me straight away and wouldn't let go.

The rather delicious cocktail of Goth rock meets industrial in a dark alley, with some very 80's pop touches! The most exciting thing about Deathstars is they know how to pen a catchy song. In fact there are eleven catchy songs on offer here, not a dud to be found.

I did think that jugding by the cover and bio sheet, that I was in for a band that wouldn't appeal to an old fart like myself.

But how wrong was I, Deathstars have a sound, it must be the 1980's vibes, that have a very broad range, to appeal to old and younger teenage fans.

The gothic element mainly comes from the vocals, the music is in places Rammstein like, ('Blitkrieg') and even Cradle Of Filth get a nod in, 'Virtue To Vice', with the vox slowly almost wispered in a Dani Filth like manner. Elsewhere I am pleasantly reminded of The Kovernant, and their classic 'Animatronic' album.

This is not to say the Deathstars are ripping anyone off, they take all these obvious influences and add their own style to come up with a winning combination.

Now I must seek out their debut album...
