CAPRICORNS Capricorns EP (Rise Above) (2004)
Another promising offering from Rise Above records, the Capricorns self-titled EP hypnotises from start to finish with three atmospheric and intriguing compositions. A relative newcomer to the Doom happy (sorry, depressed) family, the line-up of this quartet is made up of Nathan Bennett and Kevin Williams of Bridge and Tunnel, as well as Dean Berry (a former Iron Monkey) and Chris Turner from Orange Goblin.
The release starts with ‘Comrades in Tears’, so moody a track that it actually makes you feel like sitting in a corner and staying in it forever.
But, as far as I have gathered, the Capricorns aren’t just about Doom for Doom’s sake, there is actually quite an interesting musical development in all three tracks and ‘Queen of Bruises’ and ‘Transcendental Evisceration’ combine both the typical heavy, dark doom pace with some more light-hearted elements.
In fact, the best way to describe the Capricorns’ music (as far as one can determine from an EP) would be a dark impressionist painting with some splashes of light and colour in places.
Notably, the guys have dispensed with vocals where these appear unnecessary and only have a vocal line on the third track, which results in the voice being treated as another instrument, blending into the whole 17 minutes of atmospheric brilliance that this EP represents.
Offering only three tracks as a starter was a cruel thing to do, and I impatiently await the main course!
