BRAZEN ABBOT ‘A Decade Of Brazen Abbot’ Frontiers FRCD212 (2004)

Yes it is 10 years since virtuoso guitarist Nikolo Kotzev formed Brazen Abbot, and if this live set is anything to go by, they’ve produced some superb metal along the way.

Glenn Hughes sang on the debut all those years ago, but here it’s former Purple/Rainbow/Malmsteen singer Joe Lynn Turner.

Recorded in Kotzev’s native Bulgaria, the crowd are particularly receptive, and the music is strong and solid. Think the heavy end of Deep Purple and heavy it up some more, it also shows how good is JLT when he’s not doing the commercial stuff.

Although I’ve compared Deep Purple, it’s not as derivative as it could be, and it’s thoroughly enjoyable beginning to end. Old and new numbers sit nicely together, it’s a good 10 year celebration by any standards.

***½
