ANAND ‘A Man's Mind’ Lion Music (2004)

A Dutch guitarist virtuoso much in the Satriani and Vai vein, this is a reissue of Anand Mahangoe’s debut.

From the outset the playing is smooth, fluid and exceptional, with a galloping bass line a la Maiden. Tracks that follow vary the pace, with the occasional jazz hint to the bass, and an electronic sound to the drums. There’s even a nod at trad metal in places.

But it’s all instrumental. And songs on instrumental albums are rarely arranged or written to break up the lead guitar, so there is an element of monotony, but the set’s pretty enjoyable throughout all the same.
