Ten Questions with...

BEN ARTHUR

Ben Arthur is the talented singer songwriter whose latest album is called 'Edible Darling'. This CD is released in the UK shortly.

1. What are you currently up to?

I'm about to go out on the road for a couple of weeks with a collection of songwriters (Abra Moore, Teitur, Vienna Teng) here in the US, doing a sort of singers-in-the-round thing.

2. What has been the highlight(s) and lowpoints(s) of your career to date?

When I was at college I unexpectedly got a gig opening for Tori Amos in front of 800 people. That was pretty fun. As for lowpoints, that's pretty much every time I ever hauled an armload of steaks to a table in a restaurant.

3. What is the reaction you are getting to the new album, 'Edible Darling'?

To me it seems unbelievably positive, but then I'm pretty much excited to know that anybody's listening at all.

4. What are your own personal favorites on the album, and why?

The title cut, 'Edible Darling' is the most recent song I wrote on the album, so that one is pretty fresh for me.

5. Who have been your main musical influences and what are your all-time favourite artists/albums?

Son Volt--Trace

Paul Simon--Graceland

Drive-By Truckers--Decoration Day

Pink Floyd--The Wall

Lyle Lovett--Joshua Judges Ruth

ACDC--Back in Black

Parker Paul--Wingfoot

6. If you could put together a dream band, who would be the players?

Dave Grohl--drums

Emmylou Harris--guitar, vox

Rachel Yamagata--keys, vox

John Paul Jones--bass

Tom Morello--guitar

7. Name the contemporary singer-songwriters you most admire (male or female) and why?

I'm a huge fan of Jay Farrar's writing and offbeat production ethos. Ditto for Lyle Lovett. Both seem to follow their own peculiar muses.

8. What inspires you to write your material - personal experiences, etc. How does the writing process take place. (eg do you come up with the music and then add lyrics, or vice versa?)

Some is certainly personal experience, but a lot of it is just stories I hear or imagine. As for lyrics or egg, different songs come in different ways. You accept what you're given.

9. Outside of business, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Reading, writing, playing. Pretty much what I do in 'business'. Guess that's a benefit of doing what you love.

10. Message to your fans...

More underclothes on stage, please. I have certain delusions to maintain here people.
