BILL WYMAN'S RHYTHM KINGS Let The Good Times Roll
(Classic Pictures DVD7084X) (2004)
Classic rhythm and rock from Rolling Stone...

Bill Wyman

It seems that the former Rolling Stone bassist has got himself a good number here. He's in a large comfortable band, less spotlight or responsibility. Just the name.

The music is largely very enjoyable rock'n'roll, soul, blues and r'n'b, blended for the MOR market.

This DVD features two concerts from January this year, one 45 minutes and the other 75 minutes. That's two hours of music, mixing originals and covers.

The nine piece band produce a full, solid and tight sound, with two guitars, two keyboards and two saxophones. `Jitterbug Blues' stands out, as does `Race With The Devil'. It's the old numbers by the likes of Ray Charles that really get things going. All great stuff.

`Hit The Road Jack' is a good number, but if you've ever heard the Blues Corporation's version, you'd realise how this band is screaming out for a vocalist like Nicky Moore.

The band is good, but nothing too exciting. Much sound comes from pianist Georgie Fame, but it's pianist Mike Sanchez and guitarist Albert Lee that really get animated. Wyman remains surprisingly innocuous throughout.

Add on a 30 minute On Tour With The Band featurette and you get a good package and a good representation of the band. If you like your music easy to listen to, then this is excellent.
