JUSTIN MURPHY (HEAVEN SCENT)

1. What are you currently up to? (e.g. touring/studio,etc.)

We released our debut album "Long Story Short" in September this year and have been touring it ever since. We also released a single, "Short Goodbyes" from the album after the horrific events in Bali. Every cent from the single goes to a relief fund to help those affected by the tragedy. We have also been in talks with several overseas parties in regards to expanding outside of Australia. So it has all been exciting and very positive.

2. Who was/is your biggest influence on your career?

Musically, my own biggest influence would have to be Bon Jovi, especially for the way they have stood their ground ensuring longevity. Personally, it would have to be my family and friends and everyone that the band has surrounded themselves with.

3. Brief history of your work to date the style of music you play.

In 1989, I formed Heaven Scent but we never did anything really serious for more than a brief moment until 1996. That year we recorded our first EP "Rain". I was happy with the product but I knew deep down that the line-up wasn't quite right. In 1997, Zoli (lead guitarist) and I met Scott (bass guitar) and Fletch (keyboards) and we recorded the single "Am I Crazy?". Still not completely satisfied, we kept searching for the missing piece of the puzzle and that came with the arrival of Aaron on drums. After weeks/months/years of rehearsing and endless amounts of gigs, we finally started putting down tracks to be used on our debut album "Long Story Short" (released this year in September).

The best way we can describe our music is that it is simply "honest" rock music. The songs are straight to the point and easy to listen to, but with the various influences of the band members they could never be seen as generic rock/pop music.

4. What has been the highlight(s) and lowpoint(s) of your career to date?

The highlight of my career so far would have to be when I found out that our single "Short Goodbyes" debuted at #8 on the JB Hi-Fi (one of Australia's largst music retailers) Australian Singles Chart beating many established artists in the process.

The low point has been the realisation that for the band to succeed, we would have to go offshore (but that's not to say we won't be back!).

5. Who have you toured with and would like to tour with in the future?

We have been fortunate to have played along side many top Australian acts such as Jimmy Barnes, Billy Thorpe, Vanessa Amorosi, Invertigo and the Screaming Jets to name a few. As for who I would love to tour with...i'm not fussed with who. But seeing as my bags are already packed, I just want to know when and where we are going.

6. What do you think of the state of rock music at the moment?

I think that good rock music has been on a 10 year holiday but thanks to the influx of rock in the charts and on radio, I believe the honeymoon is over...thank God.

7. If you could create a fantasy band - what would be the line-up and why?

To be honest, my fantasy band would end up looking like my fantasy philharmonic orchestra because there are so many players that I admire and would love to be on the same stage as. If it were up to the rest of the guys, it would probably look something like this - Tommy Lee, Ace Frehley, Dave Gilmour, Bootsie Collins, Stevie Wonder, Prince & Jon Bon Jovi (but then again, I could be wrong)

9. What CD's do you currently have available and where can they be purchased from?

Our debut album "Long Story Short" is available online via www.chaosmusic.com.au and can be purchased (in Australia) at any good music store.

We have samples of the songs on our website at http://www.heavenscent.com.au The single "Short Goodbyes" is available in Australia through all JB Hi-Fi stores. Our back catalogue, including our first EP "Rain", is available via mail order through our website.
