JOHN PAYNE & ANDY NYE The Passion DevgelVoiceprint DEVGEL4CD (2009)

John Payne and Andy Nye

John Payne is currently touring his alternate version of Asia and 'The Passion' is back right there where it all started. In the mid-80s, just as the first version of Asia was wobbling with the departure of Steve Howe, Payne met kindred spirit Andy Nye one-time Michael Schenker Group keyboard player.

The resulting album will appeal to all fans of melodic rock but especially Payne-era Asia and there is definite read-across. Opener 'All We Need Is A Miracle' is a typical slice of eighties melodic hard rock whilst 'Break The Chain' and 'Desire' show why Payne is such a highly regarded vocalist and songwriter. 'Burning The Innocent' reminds us of 'Lay Down Your Arms'.

Although this release has a liner note from Payne, it is light on album detail, and even his note is sloppy referring to a track that doesn't appear on the album. There aren't even credits for their supporting musicians, former Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr and guitarist Ant Glynne (later with Rick Wakeman).

The use of period synths, the ubiquitous drum machine, and a few audible drop-outs suggests that these tracks are demos that weren't intended for release. But we should be grateful for the chance to reappraise, and to add another piece to the Asia jigsaw.
