THRESHOLD The Ravages Of Time - Best Of Inside Out (2007)

Threshold

A double CD best of featuring twenty songs and covering all the band's albums up to and including this years excellent 'Dead Reckoning' release.

Nothing really to draw in existing fans bar the radio edits of the two newest songs 'Slipstream' and the wonderful 'Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams'.

A couple of the older songs are also various edited versions that have only been available before on expanded re-issues.

Threshold are one of the best progressive metal bands out there who successfully meld heavy riffs, wonderful keyboards and rock solid rhythm topped off by two of the best vocalists in this genre, Andrew 'Mac' McDermott and Damian Wilson, who is now back in the band for his third stint.

For me the latter day output hits the spot due to the increased use of keys and atmospherics, tracks like 'Mission Profile', 'Fragmentation' and 'Pressure' are simply awesome, there are no other words for it.

Disc two covers the earlier years including a personal favourite 'The Latent Gene', although songs like 'Eat The Unicorn' and 'Sanity's End' don't quite match up to the later years. They just lack that finishing touch you get on songs recorded after 2001.

A 'must have' introduction to the band and from here you can then go onto discovering their back catalogue depending on which era takes your fancy. Fans of the band will doubtless want this for the radio edit versions but would have been good maybe to have some unreleased live versions on here for fans.

A great band, a great compilation - go get it!

****½
