URBAN TURBANS ‘Turban Town’ (Point 2002)

This CD was meant to be the soundtrack to the film ‘Twin Towns’, which came out a few years ago but this CD has only be made available now. It features Martin Ace and Mickey Jones, who were both founding members of Welsh rock band Man. The style of the CD is rock ’n ’roll with very Elvis like vocals! Opener ‘Back in the Golden Temple of Amritsar’ sounds like the Beatles ‘Back in the USSR’, but the band do admit to this in the sleeve notes! The Elvis pastiche ‘Rainbows On My Blue Suede Shoes’ is fun, with some nice honky tonk piano. ‘This Gig’s A Pig’ is a driving rock ‘n’ roller, brings to mind the Stray Cats. ‘Surfing Through Her Soul’ slows things down with a mellow ballad. ‘Elvis the Visit’ deals with Elvis’ return to Earth to save rock ‘n’ roll and mankind!

A very different album - lots of great rock ‘n’ roll but with limited appeal outside of Man completists and rock ‘n’ roll fans.

Review by Jason Ritchie

***** Out of this world | **** Pretty damn fine |
*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
