ULI JON ROTH ‘Legends of Rock - Live at Castle Donington’ (SPV 2002)

Recorded live at Castle Donington last year the line-up features guitarist Uli Jon Roth(ex-SCORPIONS),Jack Bruce on bass (CREAM), Clive Bunker on drums(ex-JETHRO TULL), Don Airey on keyboards (RAINBOW,OZZY,DEEP PURPLE) and Barry Sparks on bass (DOKKEN,MALMSTEEN), plus UFO (MOGG, WAY, SCHENKER). Pretty impressive line-up to say the least!

‘Sky Overture’ opens CD one in fine style, some very impressive guitar from Uli. Another instrumental ‘Aranjuez’ follows and then UFO kick in! ‘Let It Roll’ rollicks along and sees the band in fine form. A very long ‘Rock Bottom’ (clocking in at over ten minutes) is next, with some sublime guitar playing and Phil Mogg in fine voice. Jack Bruce takes to the stage for the Cream classics ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ and ‘White Room’, the latter a fine vocal from Jack Bruce. The first CD closes with two Hendrix tracks - ‘All Along the Watchtower’ and ‘Little Wing’, with again superb guitar soloing from Uli.

The second CD starts with the short instrumental ‘Trail in the Wind’, before UFO appear again on ‘Midnight Train’, another great rocker from a criminally underrated band. Cream’s ‘Spoonful’ is another extended jam and personally my least favourate track on the CD. UFO return for ‘Doctor Doctor’, which sounds superb! The band were really on form by the sounds of things. ‘Fireworks Jam’ closes the album with an all star jam and guitars to the max! Great way to end a great album! A quality line-up of musicians who really do great credit to the originals and this CD is a must for any fan of classic rock.
