TYGERS OF PAN TANG ‘Noises From The Cathouse’
(Communique CMGCD26 64:46) (2003)

The former NWoBHM stalwarts have released their new album on Communique (formerly home of Girlschool and Samson). In places it’s very strong. Opener ‘Boomerang’ mixes the hard power metal of old (abeit more melodic) with acoustic Rush, while ‘Godspeak’, although a good number, is a little more disjointed.

Founder member and guitarist Robb Weir is joined for a twin lead attack by Dean Robbertson, backed with drummer Craig Ellis and bassist Brian West. Vocalist Richie Wicks is a former Angel Witch bassist/vocalist, and if he handles concerts like he did at the 2000 London show with Samson then they should be well worth seeing.

While the music is top metal, it appears derivative in places. Iommi riffs (no bad thing) and beefed up 1990 Metallica still make for a good listen. And ‘Highspeed Highway Superman’ has an element of Dio.

Whatever the influences, the album is pretty good but not great, because I’ve heard them do so much better. Still very enjoyable.

On the downside, the booklet features no more than a band picture, a track listing and a link to a non-existent website. I had to find the band line-up by other means.
