TONY MACALPINE Collection Mascot M7193-2 (2006)

King of Shred Macalpine is oft overlooked in favour of Vai, Malmsteen et al, but this guitar virtuoso is well worth investigating as this collection shows.

The first 4 tracks, from 1985, feature bassist Billy Sheehan, and highlight Macalpine's neo classical style and fluid playing well. The music is heavy and thoroughly enjoyable.

1992's 'Champion' shows a more atmospheric side, with Tony also playing the piano, while the following year's 'Rats With Wings' is far faster and heavier.

Later tracks also feature Barry Sparks and Tony Franklin.

The guitar work here is not just for the connoisseur, the music is heavy, fluid and excellent throughout. Instrumental yes, boring no. If you're new to Tony Macalpine, or find one whole album too much, this fine collection will do you extremely well.
