TONY HERNANDO ‘III’ Lion Music LMS119 (2004)

Spanish metal? Who’d have thought! But yes Hernando is a Spanish guitarist of some note, who now runs his own guitar school too. This is his third album (hence the title).

Although instrumental, it does feature several structured songs and doesn’t always rely on wanky solos the way some guitarists do. It does however miss the vocals or progressive arrangements that would break up the songs. So although an excellent guitar album, there is an element of monotony.

The acoustic breaks work well, and some of the heavier guitar is almost grungy. That said, the album doesn’t do as much as it should.

Well worth a listen, if only once.

**½
