SHYLOCK ‘Welcome To Illusion ’
(MTM 068191) (2004)

The third album from this hard rock band. They play in a similar mould to the Scorpions with big choruses and plenty of guitars. Just listen to opener ‘Welcome to Illusion’ or ‘But I Like It’, with vocalist Matthias Schenk not a million miles away from the sound of Klaus Meine. On the slower numbers, like ‘Lose You’ and ‘Tomorrow’, Shylock make full use of harmonies and create rich background textures. In fact they pull off these style of songs better than the mid-tempo rockers. The band play well and keep a tight sound but it just lacks a killer tune or two.

Solid if unspectacular album of hard rock tunes and if you like the Scorpions then this will do nicely.

***** Out of this world | **** Pretty damn fine |
*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
