ROBERT WYATT & FRIENDS Theatre Royal Drury Lane 8th September 1974 Hannibal (2005)

This concert was recorded very shortly after Robert Wyatt’s accident which has left him in a wheelchair ever since. Wyatt is best known for his role in Soft Machine and Matching Mole and he has a stellar supporting cast of musicians including Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, Mike Oldfield and Ivor Cutler, also John Peel introduces the whole show in his own inimitable style.

It’s not an easy listen at times, especially if like me you are not a fan of jazz, but you have to admire the amazing trumpet playing of Mongezi Feza and the violins of Fred Frith. ‘Sea Song’ and a unique take on ‘I’m A Believer’ are definite highlights.

At times the free form jazz can drag but if you are a fan I am sure you will be delighted!

A well thought out and produced live CD, which amply illustrates Robert Wyatt’s musical ability and also his knack of assembling equally talented musicians around himself.

***½
