PENNILESS ‘Anola’ (Ulftone 2002)

A Finnish band comprising of Lasse Alisaari (drums), Ossi Alisaari (vocals/guitar), Pekka Alisaari (vocals/guitar), Kimmo Kurittu (bass) and Mikko Pere (guitar). ‘Black Crows’ opens the album, a fine melodic rocker with some distorted feedback guitar. ‘Beautiful’ is like a more melodic Pixies track, complete with chiming guitars. ‘Adam’s Apple Pie’ has been a radio hit already in many countries and this track would make a good single, with its melodic backdrop. ‘My Points’ is a spacey ballad, with some refrained acoustic guitar. ‘Heaven Is A Lie’ is a bit throwaway but the following tracks such as ‘Addicted’ and ‘Summer’ keep the standard up.

The band put melody first and then adds crunching rock guitar. They have their own style but are comparable to Smashing Pumpkins, the Pixies or Live. A band to watch out for.

***** Out of this world | **** Pretty damn fine |
*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
