NIACIN Organik Magna Carta MAX9081-2 (2005)

Of the plethora of work bassist Billy Sheehan is involved in at any one time (previously Talas, Dave Lee Roth, Mr Big, G3, solo et al), Niacin is a quite different project and shows how diverse he is.

This is their 5th album and in keeping with their style, full of top quality jazz, fusion, funk and hard rock.

The album is instrumental and also guitar free, making more work for Sheehan and keyboardist John Novello. Yes it’s quite jazzy but from the musician’s point of view it’s manic, outrageous and a lot of fun.

“Blisterine” is interesting and very enjoyable, featuring a nice bass line that’s mixed well and some great keyboard lines.

There’s even a good take on Zappa’s “King Kong”.

A very enjoyable album and essential for budding bassists and techies.

***½
