MINDSET 7 ‘Blur’ (Metal Mayhem, 2002)

A new band featuring the line-up of vocalist/bass player Mick Rowe, drummer Criss Wheeler and guitarist Phil Montfort. Definitely a modern sounding band, in the vein of Goo Goo Dolls, Collective Soul and Butch Walker, with the deep vocals style of Creed thrown into the mix as well. But fear not rock fans! They can pen a good tune, like the pop rock opener ‘Long Red Hair’, the harmony filled ballad ‘Control’ or the bass driven grungy sound of ‘SOS’. A few songs are not that memorable like ‘Illuminate’ and ‘Six’ with it’s distorted vocal and guitar grates to my ears! To round the album off the band cover Simple Mind’s hit ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ and a fine version it is too.

A very sound debut full of some quality modern rock tunes. Fans of Goo Goo Dolls, Creed, Collective Soul et al would do well to check this out. A band to watch in the future.

***** Out of this world | **** Pretty damn fine |
*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
