LALU ‘Oniric Metal’ (2005)

Lalu are what some might call a 'supergroup', which features Ryan Van Poederooyen from (The Devin Townsend Band) and Russell Bergquist (formerly from Annihilator). Also featured on this crushing debut are Joop Wolters (guitarist of Arabesque) and Martin LeMar from Tomorrow's Eve.

The music is progressive metal, with some bone crunching guitar with from Wolters, and some atmospheric keyboards suppiled by Vivien Lalu. I'm pleased to say that music on offer here will please both prog rock and metal fans alike, with an emphasis on songs, rather than the standard music complexity and over indulgence, that many bands from these genre's seem to be hell bent on these days.

One thing that detracts from the please of the excellent music on offer here is the muddy mix and lack of treble on the albums production, I guess that's who equalizers are for, unfortunately, this reviewer does not have one on his music listening equipment, or believe in the use of them anyway!

Nothing really that memorable here, a few chorus's stand out and there is some very nice keyboards here and there, and as a massive fan of Dream Theater I can say there is nothing to remind me of them here. Perhaps an almost original sounding progressive album has come to light?
