LA GUNS Rip The Covers Off (Mascot Records M70952)(2004)
It seems to be covers album season amongst the rock world with
Baltimore, Schenker/Pattison and Aerosmith all putting out recent
covers albums. LA Guns today of course is `Guns'-less as Traci Guns
is in Brides of Destruction (although he still remains a member of LA
Guns). But vocalist Phil Lewis is still here and he has a hand in the
choice of the covers, most are from the 70's with a few early 80's
and late 60's numbers thrown in the mix. Ex-WASP drummer Steve Riley
remains on drums and is joined by newer members Adam Hamilton (bass)
and Stacey Blades (guitar).
Most covers work on here, like the ramble through `Custard Pie'
(Led Zep) and the blues boogie of `I Just Want To Make Love To You'
(Foghat). The Saxon cover `Wheels of Steel' comes across well proving
that LA Guns were always more metal tinged than many hair bands of
the 80's. Donovan's `Hurdy Gurdy Man' should have been best left
alone as it really outstays its welcome... Pick of the bunch is
either `Stone Cold Crazy' (Queen) or the tasty slide guitar and
rock `n' roll vibe of `Rock `N' Roll Outlaw' (Rose Tattoo).
For Faster Pussycat fans, Brent Muscat (Muscat briefly replaced
Traci Guns) appears on the two live tracks - `Revolution' and `Don't
Look At Me That Way', both LA Guns originals.
Hardly essential but a fun album and when the original tunes are
so good you can't really go wrong. Hopefully LA Guns will return next
with a new studio album as they have been producing good material of
late.
