IAN GOMM 'Hold On - The Very Best Of'
Cherry Red CDMRED270 (2005)

Much travelled Gomm forged a career with pub rockers Brinsley Schwarz, and this collection showcases the best of his solo career.

Dating back to the 70s, this pop/rock features some interesting rhythms and, as “24 Hour Service” shows, a full sound when a brass section is used. A touch of reggae, some acoustic guitar, and some great mood swings (“Come On” is a dark moody new-wave number with a real tang in the guitar) make for some great if light hearted listening.

With singles, discography, lyrics, sleevenotes, it’s a full and well packaged release.

***½

***** Out of this world | **** Pretty damn fine |
*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
