ARGENT In Deep/Nexus
Edsel MEDCD759 (45:33) (42:22) (2005)

Led by former Zombie Rod Argent, Argent the band produced some fine albums in the early 70s, The song writing partnership of Argent and guitarist Russ Ballard made an instant impact, and the success of In Deep’s opener God Gave Rock’n’Roll To You shows that well.

In Deep, released in 1973, features some lengthy keyboard work from Argent as you’d expect, with Ballard’s guitar fitting in well.

Nexus, the last to feature Ballard, is more heavily arranged, and is certainly downbeat. But the keyboard work is at its progressive best. The Coming Of Kohoutek has touches of both ELP and Deep Purple. A strong and thoroughly enjoyable set with Argent’s keyboards taking control.

Argent never achieved what they should have, the these two albums are perhaps their best, so it’s fitting they’re packaged together and well annotated..
