ANGEL WITCH Angel Witch (25th Anniversary edition) Sanctuary CMQCD1157 (78:44)

Once described as playing Black Sabbath through a cement mixer, this classic and influential NWoBHM album has again been reissued, this time in fully expanded form.

Guitarist and vocalist Kevin Heybourne led the band through various line-ups, and the music is classic metal with a dark edge, a touch of Maiden and, sadly, production sound that nearly matched their thinness of luck. However, it’s been name-checked by various bay area thrash bands, which is no bad thing.

The title track is well known, with the guitar work and chorus both standing out.

Confused stands out, and White Witch, Gorgon and Angel Of Death all help paint the picture in 4 minute thrashes.

Bassist Kevin Riddles and drummer Dave Hogg make up the band, and there occasional if discreet keyboards too, adding a nice touch.

Every non-LP single and b-side is included, some real rarities and gems there, including the legendary Baphomet from the Metal For Muthas LP and 4 Friday Rock Show sessions.

This album epitomises the highs and lows of the NWoBHM, and is excellently and completely packaged too.
