December 2006 News Part 1

NIGHTWISH - Search for a new singer continues!

As there are still numerous requests from young female singers: yes, the search for the new NIGHTWISH singer is still going on. And like all the approx. 1100 demos that have been sent in so far, all applications that will be sent before the 16th January 2007 will be heard by the band and take part in their decision.
NOTE: ultimate deadline for sending in demos will be 15th of January 2007!

Please DO NOT send MP3-samples via e-mail! All demos have to be sent on CD along with contact information of the female singer. Read more here!

TAROT - Album-pre-listening online!

The godfathers of Finnish Heavy Metal with NIGHTWISH bass player Marko Hietala, TAROT, will release their new album "Crows Fly Black" on 19th January 2007. Exclusively in advance, HERE you have the chance to listen to some of the songs. The guys will come over to Germany for some live shows in February and will come back for a full European tour in late April. For NIGHTWISH-fans this will probably be the only chance to see the bass player in an intimate club atmosphere. Check all dates here!

SONATA ARCTICA - Studio diary!

SONATA ARCTICA have just started recording their new album. Here you can find the first part of a studio diary with some information about the recordings, posted by Henkka:
"I'll tell you a little bit about where we are with the album for those of you being curious. I went to Kemi last week (29.11.) to check out what was happening and to pick up the basic tracks for my overdubs.

At that point Tommy had already played all the drums, Jani had laid down demo-guitars, and some of the bass-tracks have also been ready. In addition to this there was a whole bunch of singing and keys on there by Tony, so I got a pretty good idea about how things seem to shape up. I've been hanging around the Tico-Tico Studio for a couple of days, listening to the songs and Marko playing bass.

Anyway, yesterday Tony came down to Kokkola and we headed out to my friend's studio (Studio 57, which is basically in the woods) with a wild bunch of string players, just to jam around a bit. At the end of the day we had two tracks ready, we'll see if they make it to the album. It was, however, very nice to listen to professionals playing some of our songs, adding their own flavour to the mix. As I write this, Jani is in Helsinki at Sonic Pump studios, tracking all the rhythm guitars (he'll be done by the end of the week), on Thursday (7.12.) I'll go back to Studio 57 to play some Hammond parts and next week I'm supposed to play the Grand Piano for a couple of songs.

It's quite interesting with the Hammond & piano, since we tune down a half step and you can't tune those instruments, so it might be a little bit tricky. Those of you who don't know what I'm talking about...never mind...and all you crazy keyboard players out there, you'll know what I mean - boring technical details!
So, the album is well on its way....and all the recording should be done by the end of the month. This time we have about 20 songs.

We'll see how many will actually end up on the album. Musically, this album will be a lot more progressive than the last one and I think it will end up heavier as well.
That's all for now,

Furthermore, the band has been confirmed to play a headliner show at ProgPower USA VIII on December 5th, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia / USA.

RIDE THE SKY - Sign with Nuclear Blast!

RIDE THE SKY, the new band of ex-HELLOWEEN drummer and MASTERPLAN founder Uli Kusch and ex-TEARS OF ANGER / BEYOND TWILIGHT singer Bjrn Jansson plus Benny Jansson on guitar, have signed a worldwide deal with Nuclear Blast!

"We're very happy that RIDE THE SKY has inked a deal with the label that has brought up so many great bands in the past years", states Uli. "We're looking forward to a creative cooperation with Nuclear Blast!"

"We are extremely proud about being part of the Nuclear Blast roster and together with Uli Kusch, our song writing will take us to a whole new dimension", adds singer Bjrn Jansson. At the moment, the band is still writing songs for the upcoming debut album.

The recording will take place in the band's own studio (Monsterclan Studios N&S) soon; RIDE THE SKY will produce the record by themselves together with a co-producer and are currently in negotiations with various contacts concerning the mix.
RIDE THE SKY's debut album will be released around August / September 2007.

Finnish band GHOST BRIGADE, one of the new Season of Mist new signings, will enter the studio on January 6th with their "house-engineer" Mikko Poikolainen to record their first album.

Update Diskreet on tour with Necrophagist and Misery Index Feb/March 07

Diskreet are pure adrenalised brutality personified. Unorthodox structures blended with pummelling groove combined with a savage attack of buzz saw guitars and some of the most ultra-violent blast ridden drumming in the genre, creating a sound that will satisfy the most dedicated Death Metal head, as well as worshippers of the modern Tech/Grind movement.

Since forming in late 2003, Diskreet have developed a huge following in their native Kansas, ripping up the stage with a hugely diverse range of ground breaking acts that reflect their refusal to be pigeonholed into one genre. These bands include Deicide, The Acacia Strain, Napalm Death, Despised Icon, Through The Eyes Of The Dead, From A Second Story Window, Origin, Into The Moat, Psyopus, Ed Gein, All Else Failed, Pissing Razors, Anal Blast, Cannae, Incantation and many, many more.

THE DESTINY PROGRAM - Sign with Nuclear Blast!

THE DESTINY PROGRAM, formerly DESTINY, have signed a contract with Nuclear Blast. 'We are very happy and look forward to a good cooperation between us and the label', the group has posted. The guys will hit the studio beginning of January together with Anders Fridn (IN FLAMES) and Daniel Bergstrand.

For mixing Jrg Umbreit from Principal Studios will be responsible. 'We have to thank everyone for patience and support. We can hardly wait to start with recording', the band has further said. Hugo Sundkvist from Hitsville Graphix will take care for the artwork. The album s release is planned for early summer 2007.

IN FLAMES - US tour successfully finished!

The US Tour with LACUNA COIL has finally finished. IN FLAMES bass player Peter Iwers has posted the following statement regarding this:

"Hey all! Thanx a lot for a great tour. It was so much fun being on the road with LACUNA COIL, THE SWORD and THE SEEMLESSES, great people and great bands. Right now I'm on the plane over to Sweden, where I'm looking forward to spending a nice holiday with my family. I bought my daughter a cute little Hello Kitty snow globe that she would absolutely love, but unfortunately security rules on airports prevents you from bringing snow globes onboard.

I mean, come on, they wouldn't even provide a way for me to have it sent or anything like that. I appreciate all these security rules because they are there for a reason, but sometimes you just gotta relax.

I mean, what kind of harm am I supposed to do with that? I had the receipt and the full details from the box of the thing but still my daughter won't be getting that for Christmas, cause they took it...bast*rds! Anyway, it's been a great productive year and I thank you all for that, now you have a great time on your holidays and we'll see you all next year."

RAGE - Tons of work for Smolski!

RAGE-guitarist Victor Smolski is currently working on a compilation CD for the 20th anniversary of Nuclear Blast. Though having a lot of work, he found some time to post news from the studio:

"Hi friends, Victor here! It's a great honor for me, working at the compilation CD for the 20th anniversary of Nuclear Blast. It will be an album containing ten songs of various Metal bands out of the Nuclear Blast history, including a new RAGE song for which I composed, produced and recorded all guitars, keyboards and bass.

I've received support by Andre Hilgers (drums) and Peavy Wagner (lyrics). Except for some vocal parts, all songs were recorded at VPS studio in Hamm, where Charly Czajkovski again did a great job.

During composing, I tried to make all songs in typical style and concerning the pitch of the voice, much comfortable for the singer. I didn't expect that, besides hearing out the different styles of the bands, the composing and arranging, I would have so much stress with "office work such as mailing and phoning.

Thanks a lot to all singers for the good co-operation. Special thanks to Andy Siry, Jaap Wagemaker and Achim Khler, as well, for their support!'

Here's some song examples for you:

'Bloodsucker' sung by Schmier, DESTRUCTION:Really thrashy number with 200 double bass. The song deals with the current crisis in Irac war and their causes (failed US politics)

'A Perfect Day' sung by Andi Deris, HELLOWEEN:Straight Helloween-style Metal song with a catchy chorus. The song deals with the incalculability of life and the associated fact that our end can overtake us any time.

'Ruling The World' sung by Tony Kakko, SONATA ARCTICA: Straight Metal-tune with several voices and keyboard arrangements. The song is about the arrogant power politics of the western Great Powers.

AFTER FOREVER - New album title revealed

After four full-length albums and one mini album, AFTER FOREVER decided to make their upcoming album a self-titled album. Sander Gommans: "This album does not only show new elements of AFTER FOREVER, but it's also a reflection of the past. We wrote this album, while negotiating with new labels, and felt a lot of energy.

The previous albums all had their own style and identity. This time we carried these different elements to the extremes. AFTER FOREVER is a metal band with classical influences, on our upcoming CD the "chemistry" between these two worlds worked out better than ever! Whatever we did in the past and planed for the future: you'll find it on 'After Forever'!"
