Ten Questions with...

JOHN YOUNG

John Young has to be one of the most underated men in rock. He has worked with the Scorpions, Asia, John Wetton, Uli Jon Roth & many more. A firm live favourite and he is currently on na solo headlining tour, swiftly followed by a tour supporting Midge Ure (Ultravox). More info at his excellent website.
1. What are you currently up to?

Touring with my own band, and also supporting Midge ure with my solo show as well as preparing for the forthcoming Bonnie Tyler tour.

2. What has been the highlight(s) and lowpoints(s) of your career to date?

Ooh too many really.

Touring the US with Uli Roth in 85, playing with George and Ringo! Working on the Acoustica tour with the Scorps. Many great times with Bonnie Tyler and band over the last 10 years....and many many more... no lows ...I forget about them... apart from the sad state the business is in.

3. You do a lot of touring - do you ever get tired of it? Which venues do you enjoy playing the most? Is the rock scene healthier in the UK at the moment than the mid/late-90's?

No I love it, and most gigs are fun , big stadiums are great but nowhere near as personal as a sweaty pub gig.The rock scene in the Uk is pretty dormant, too many people think they are supporting live music by seeing tribute bands etc.

We have to rekindle the belief in original music ...otherwise there won't be any tribute bands in the future.

4. Scorpions - you played keys on the 'Acoustica' tour - how did you get the gig? What was the tour like - highlights?

Rudi called me when I was working with Fish and asked me to join, the best part was touring the Far East and especially India...a great experience.

5. Your band has some top prog musicians (Robin Boult & John Jowitt for starters!). Do you plan to record new music with this current line-up?

Absolutely can't wait...and we are also hoping to have a live CD out at some point.

6. You have worked with many bands and musicians. Who would you still like to work with in the future?
Well I'd be happy to just watch the band grow, they are great guys and good players and I think if we can just get people to see it...we'll be on our way.
7. Any good rock'n'roll tales to tell?

Yup...

8. Fish - what was the experience like working with him? How do you approach songwriting with all these different artists?

You have to adapt to the artist but still keep your own style, with Fish you have to paint a canvas that inspires him to be lyrical ...then you're off and running.

9. Who have been your main influences on your career?

Patrick Moraz, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush,Sakamoto Genesis,Yes,Crimson. then Bruford, Brand X, UK and Tandoori Cassette. These days I enjoy listening to Kings X.

10. Message for your fans...

Thanks a lot...and spread the word:-)
